Question How do I reach the fuel level sender? (C280)

Hi. I have an erratic fuel gauge on my ’97 C280. Nothing new there, I know.

When searching this topic, I find a lot of discussion about it, but no one has mentioned exactly how to get to it. Can it be accessed from the trunk, under the car, or do I have to drop the tank?

Anyone done this before? Thanks in advance.

To Replace the Fuel Level Sending Units (2) You should have the car on a Lift,Then Drain The Tank ..Both Sides,Then Remove the Metal Ring that secures the Sending Units to the fuel tank. Then You Will be able to Replace the sending units...Mercedes Makes Factory tools for the job and makes It Faster...Special Drain tool,Special Socket for the Metal Ring that secures the sending units in the tank..It Can Be Done Without the MB tools ..It WILL Take Longer

Thanks Mark. The gauge seems to be working now the needle has droped away from full. I know some say the problem may have something to do with fuel contamination. Maybe, maybe not. For what it's worth, it's hot and humid out here right now. I am wondering if that may have something to do with it. I had also added a bottle of LubroMoly to the last tank.

Is the unit buried, or is there a way to see it/reach it with a long narrow rod or dowel? I'd like to give the unit a light tap in hopes it would dislodge any corrosion before I send it to the dealer (who by the way, replaced the unit once before).

Just a thought.
