Hot oil smell but temperature gauge does not confirm

Hi guys
I am new to the forum and live in cape Town South Africa.
I have a 2004 180 Kompressor station wagon with 180000km's on the clock. just serviced recently after buying it second hand.
Now i get a hot oil smell on the one side, the temperature gauge however only shows 80 degrees celcius and the water hoses do not feel hot. you can actually touch them for a while. THEn there is the top trimming which clips onto the tappet cover. This feels very hot and will almost not clip loose. Something tells me the head is getting too hot. BUT no warning on the dash board. Any idea what might be wrong guys? Could this be the thermostat? No water loss? there was a bit of oil around the spark plugs when I changed them but I think the screws were loose which hold the coils and therefore the seals on the tappet cover did not seal properly.

Thanx
Adolf

Answer

My best guess would be the valve cover gasket and spark plug hole seal rings are failing.
