Odd size tire damage 2010 4Matic?

Odd size tire damage 2010 4Matic?
I don't know the mechanics of current 4Matic systems. I am wondering if the system could be damaged by running one worn tire with three new ones. Like one with 3/32" tread and three with 10/32".
I know some AWD systems can be ruined by this, but I don't think the 4Matic is susceptible.
For instance, if I damage a tire, it's 500 miles before I can find a replacement, and I mount a worn tire.
What will happen?

I think if its only 500 miles you're ok but if you plan to drive for longer than 500 miles then you should probably replace that 1 worn tire with a new one to bring the overall diameter of the 4 tires as close as possible.
You could cause extra wear on the 4matic system if one or two tires are more worn the others.

Of course I would like to replace the mismatched tire, but what if I am driving cross country and I can't find a match for 1500 miles, what would happen to the 4Matic system?

More specifically, on our 2010 ML BlueTec, (is it 3rd gen 4Matic?), what might wear more?
Is it only the differentials rotating slightly, or am I engaging/slipping clutches, or are the brakes repeatedly activating?
