S2pid question. Surely this isnt the oil filter..?
Doing routine TLC on my recently aquired, well preserved '84 w123 280E.
Bought an oil filter (looked normal size), opened up the oil bath under the front of the carbs, and pulled out...a very odd little flying saucer type filter - about half an inch deep. Is that it?? and thereforehave I been sold the wrong part?
Or am I in the wrong part of the engine bay?
- I cant see anything else that looks like an oil filter, and there's nothing in the owners manual.
Thanks, and sorry for the really daft question..

Oil filter
The last 280E imported to the US was in 81. The filter for that year is a filter that fits into an allumninum housing and looks to be about 4 inch by 10 inch long. I have had three W-123 but all diesels. The aluminum oil filter housing in the diesels sits back near the drivers side firewall near where the vaccuum lines go from the engine compartment through into the passenger compartment. It is secured with two 13mm nuts. Your filter looks to be similar to the diesel fister so possibly the housing will be similer.
From what you discribe, it sounds like a power stearing filter. This sits at the front of the engine on the drivers side. It is covered by an aluminum cap that you twist off by hand. The fiter sits in the bottom of the reservoir as best as I remember with maby 250cc of red PS fluid in the reservoir.
Let me know what you find. Good Luck!

PS pump with filter
PS with cap off to the right and above the radiator hose. You can see the "flying saucer" filter at the bottom of the PS fluid. Is this what you are referring to in your post?

Hilarious! I can't believe I have been digging about in the PS reservoir!! - Sure enough, what I thought were oil lines lead all the way to the PS unit..
I still for the life of me can't find any thing oil filterish, even looking at your helpful pix.
I'll keep trying..I feel such a strumpf ..
Thankyou for taking time to help sph17.
