MB personal diagnostic tool
Over the last 18 months I've spent around 600£ on diagnostics on my S Class(I've had 4 so far) and I just decided I'd rather invest and buy my own system but I see that the original MB Star is very expensive and it's hard to get hold of the original one and I know nothing about them.
Anyone know which systems work well? The chinese ones? Taiwanese? What do you use?

I bought an iCarsoft i980 and while it can read many MB systems, it can't calibrate and code.
I'm looking into a cloned Chinese Star scanner, but there's a lot to figure out. Seems you need an old XP computer with a serial port.
Maybe we can get one of the experts to chime in.

Benz GL320 CDI
I have one of the Chinese clones - works on either an old IBM T-30 or a Dell D630.
I chose the Dell option and bought a used D630 from eBay and installed their hard drive. You can buy an off lease Dell without hard drive for $30-$100 depending on processor and RAM.
I have the Dell D630XFR which is the ruggedized version made for the Military - totally garage proof
I have this computer:

And I have this STAR unit:
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/DHL-F...812745070.html
I'm in no way affiliated with the seller, but I can say that the product is of good quality and their customer service/warranty is great! I recommend them.
Complete cost was less than $400 for everything

I purchased a chinese clone unit about 4 months ago.
As far as the unit itself, I have zero complaints. Wish I had bought it a long time ago. The only negative is that there really isnt any extensive tutorials or guides on using the software. Or at least I havent found any. But it did at least come with an emulator to play around with. Probably 90% of what I've learned to do so far has been from spending hours with the emulator playing "lets see what this button does".
Like "doctorpimp" I also went with the Dell D630. Got one in excellent condition off craigslist for less then a $100. A lot of them on there.
The unit I ordered from eobdtool.com. I am not affiliated with them, but would highly recommend. Great customer service over skype with any questions I had and fast shipping. Swapped the hard drive in the laptop with the one they sent, booted it up and it was ready to roll. I never had to enter any password or key or anything. Basically plug and play. I even made an unboxing video, since there werent any I could find. Not a great video but might help.
