2006 E350 Wagon ABS/ESP warning no BAS warning

On my 2006 E350 wagon the ESP / ABS warnings came on and the car went into "limp mode", but after letting the car set for one hour, it started up and all errors were gone. About one week later (with no errors) the ESP / ABS errors reappeared steering is stiff and cruise control is disabled, but the car has not switched into "limp mode" again. After reading other posts, and knowing that my battery is very old, I decided to switch out both the main and aux batteries, start up the car, re-sync the ABS and see if the errors would clear, but unfortunately they did not.

Also I have checked all fuses in the vehicle. On of the rear taillights/brake lights is not functioning, but the other one is. I have not read any error codes yet (probably should be my next step). Would it make sense to replace the brake light switch that is often referenced with this issue to rule it out? Is it possible that this switch could be bad and generate ESP/ABS warnings but no BAS warning?

I have seen a couple posts saying that a burned out brake light could could generate these warnings, is this possible? And since I clearly need to change out the brake lights anyway, does anyone have information on how to remove the inside panel on the trunk door of the wagon? My old 2000 E320 was obvious, since there were screws at the bottom, but the E350 has plastic circles where the screws of the E350 were, and I would prefer not to break them trying to remove the door.

brake lights would not cause these warnings ... best thing to do at this point is read error codes in esp , BAS , and transmission since you said its going into limp home mode !! post these errors and we ll work it through

Ok, finally had ABS codes checked a couple of weeks ago and there was just one code showing bad left front speed sensor. I ordered the part and while waiting for it to come, the car went into LIMP mode, check engine light came on, speedometer stopped working (remains at 0 at all times) and Display error visit workshop error showing up. I had the regular codes read and they show a bad speed sensor and a communication lost with ABS module error.

I cannot find information on how the w211 speedometer calculates speed. Is this error referring to the same wheel speed sensor that I will be changing for the ABS system or is this a different sensor? I assume there is no VSS like you would find in many other vehicles plugged in to the transmission. If it is the ABS sensors do generate the vehicle speed readings for the instrument cluster, is it read from all four or does only one of the four provide the speed information for the speedometer? If this front left sensor is causing the speedometer issue, will replacing it correct the LIMP mode and speedometer issue once it is replaced or will I need to have codes cleared from the computer before the car will function properly?

Update... I changed the left front ABS speed sensor and reading the codes with a standard scanner was certain that the transmission valve body and TCU would need replacing. Changing the ABS speed sensor did nothing to fix the vehicle and did not even clear the ABS codes, so I finally gave in and took the car to the dealer. After a couple of hours of diagnostics, they were not sure what the problem was, and told me they were going to clear all the codes, drive it around and test again. After another hour of diagnostics, they found the connector to the ESP module and had corroded and ruined the ESP module. Also they found a flap in the air intake manifold that was stuck and causing the Check Engine light to come on. I am still very suspicious about the transmission considering the history of this model, but I guess I will not know about that until the other work is complete and they test again. Does anyone know of any water infiltration issues around the ESP module that would cause this kind of corrosion?

I can honestly say, I would rather be driving my Benz around in limp mode rather than this Altima rental I have until the work is complete...
