ENGINE REBUILD for 67 SL 230

Hi from the UK.
I just got a 67 SL230 with the engine in the trunk.
The previous owner says the car was driving fine until the motor developed a big end knock and he limped it home to a local garage. They tore the motor down but quoted him crazy prices to re-build it, so he took the car away with the motor in pieces and left it in his garage for the past 15 years.

I'd like to rebuild this motor myself as I have lots of experience in building other American and British engines. Before I get into this, I'd like to know if this is a viable project to build this motor at home and if there is anything unusual I need to know about building these motors.......??
Any input or tips would be greatly appreciated at this stage.

Rainy.
