2003 C230 Wagon
Seeking help narrowing down error code P0705
Hello,
I have a 2003 C230 Wagon, 150K miles, that started to have problems last week. It started with the car not shifting out of first gear, and when the car was stopped the shifter would not move past N into R or P. However, by putting on the park brake and taking my foot off the regular brake, it would shift into R and P.
After the first time this happened the car drove fine for about half a day, then starting all over again. It has been parked ever since.
I spent several evenings searching the internet and, according Google, found three possible fixes.
- Replace the shifter assembly (to my knowledge nothing spilled into the shifter)
-Oil leaked from a plug sticking in the transmission, through the cable, into my TCU(?), replace it
-A plastic part inside my transmission with six solenoids is defective, and needs to be replaced (youtube series)
I bought a code reader (Autel AutoLink AL319) and was given the following code:
P0705 Transmission Range Sensor A Circuit (PRNDL Input)
Does this code narrow down the above possibilities?
Sorry for the long post, I would greatly appreciate any assistance/input you might have. It's probably apparent, but I should probably mention that I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to fixing cars.

I would start with the shifter module under the center console. Start here in the transmission area:

P0 705. Transmission selector lever coding invalid. Check: Wiring, plug connectors, Transmission range recognition
switch (S16/10).
Look at the .pdf attachment in this post:
