1998 SLK230 intermittant start, wont crank

Hello, need help...
Here are the details:
-1998 SLK230 (low miles 40k)
-all of sudden two years ago, the car would not crank/not start
-all lights come on..relay clicks under the dash, but no fuel pump turn on
-checked all the obvious..keys, FOB, neutral lockout, new battery, etc
-with the car dead, I put it on a car carrier and moved 1900 miles
-started perfectly right off the truck (a hint, shake, rattle, roll??)
-ran great for two years, and now the problem is back
-I have been able to start the car, say once every fifth time..if I hear
the fuel pump kick on, it always starts..else wise, nothing
-another clue, right before the problem happened here recently, it died
while idling in the driveway (thank god) for no reason..never did that
before
-I did check K40 relays..solder joints look great
-my guess is that it is something either with the ignition switch or some
type of starter lockout
-My question is, from a flow chart point of view, what would the difference
be as to whether the fuel pump relay kicks on or not in key position #2?
