1984 Merecedes 300D
Lack of Power
I have a 1984 Merecedes 300D that I've had for two years now and was passed down to me by my uncle who had it for over 5 years. No major problems and has had routine maintenance throughout those years, however the past 6 months I've noticed a major lack in power. We have been diagnosing and fixing different issues that have been recommended to solve but have not had any luck. Here is the work we've done:
We have changed the main and pre fuel filters, gave the engine a lashing, fixed oil leaks, and this weekend completely rebuilt the turbo.
Here are the remaining symptoms:
When beginning to accelerate the engine makes a slow "glug glug glug" noise with bluish-black smoke out the back until it finally clicks into a higher gear and then takes off smoothly. The turbo runs perfect and at higher speeds the power is fine. But as soon as I slow down to lower rpms and try to gas it, the same problem arises.
The next thing we were going to try is to work on the fuel injectors to make sure they're not clogged but wanted to get advice first to see if anyone has any experience with this.

I would suggest replacing the pre pump on the side of the injection pump. I have seen these have reduced flow as they age particularly with turbo engines.
They are cheap enough to replace.
