Engine running to cool

I have a 2006 E320 CDI. This weekend I ran up north to check on my RV with cold weather coming. On the way back I thought I could smell coolant & when I looked at the temp gauge it was reading less than 60, maybe as low as 50. Down hill thought ok maybe the smell was someone else. But the temp never got to 80 and I smelled the coolant again and the temp was at about 40. I pulled over - no coolant leaks - engine seemed fine - coolant level was good - nothing to clue what could be going on. I finished the trip home with no problems. Today going to work temp never went above 70.
So any ideas , has this happened to anyone else that found the problem. Sure normally low temp wouldn't seem to be an issue but since I've not noticed this in the past I have to think something is wrong.
Should I be concerned? Thanks

so seriously - no one has encounted this issue. Anyway - it has happened a couple more times, I'm wondering if it could be the therostat is stuck open never letting the heat builld up. Again any help or sugjestions.

New Thermostat IS Needed

You do need a new thermostat!

No doubt about it. This is a common problem with the CDIs and those of
us who have these cars have either replaced it already or soon will!
Not expensive, as I bought the complete housing with a new thermostat
in it and a temperature sender and gasket for less than $60.

Yes sir, you are spot on about the leaking fuel tank issue.
Have you found out that our CDIs are being covered under this new warranty?

Mine is getting rather bad as it has now 182K miles and is just getting worse all the time.
But the rest of the car is fine and getting stronger all the time as the miles build!

Has anyone found out if the CDIs are actually covered?

If so, I will need to see my friendly dealer and get mine repaired.

Thanks and regards,

Derrel H Green

Thank you

Green - Thank you for the reply & confermation of my thought process about it being the Thermostat. I'll search for the part and get it replaced.

On the fuel leak, I'm thinking they are not going to be doing anything to help us since no one has died from it. I'll have to see if there is a threat with DIY directions to follow. Probably no hard just we shouldn't have to pay to fix this sort of problem IMHO.

You are correct!

See: https://mbworld.org/forums/w211-amg-81/ and although we do not have E-55s, we DO HAVE W-211s and they are all covered I believe.

Read the first one at the top, a 'sticky': ! ! ! ATTENTION ! ! ! !
FUEL LEAK ISSUE . . .

Now your dealer may say your CDI is not covered, but I think it is!
Then call into MBZ as these E-55 owners are doing and take it from there.

Remember, the squeaky wheel always gets the grease.

Regards your bad thermostat, the part is available for less than $60
I think, but it has been almost three years since I did mine.
Easy to do, and it will keep yours at the recommended 92C.
Mine would run as low as 40C cruising on the freeway in January,
2012 shortly after I bought it 12-17-2011.
Stupid dealer where the original owner had it serviced 22 times
in seven years failed to see that problem!

Don't be afraid to landline me at 951 834-0433
I don't bite!
