Do the ABS/ESP warning lights come up on the dash with the ignition on and engine off?

ABS problems are common (used for the traction control) and being a new purchase the previous owner may have disconnected the warning lights to mask the problem.

I would start by looking for fault codes in the ABS unit. Can you hear the ABS pump working when you're getting wheelspin? If you can hear it operating then I would be checking the brake lines lead to the correct wheels (I have seen them mixed up before) or if you cant hear the pump running then diagnosing why it isn't running.

As a quick and easy check (and ONLY if safe to do so) I would drive the car up to approx 30kph and test if the ABS works. DO NOT perform this test if it's not safe to do so or where there is insufficient space in case of an unexpected result.

Thanks ausmbtech I can't say I do hear any noise other than the wheel spin.Do you mean the pump noise you get when the abs kicks in when you brake harsh.i must say I haven't tried the abs out as such.i did have the idea that as long as the abs light wasn't on the system was ok but that surely isn't the case.

Check if the ABS works and check for fault codes if you can.

Success

Ausmbtech, spot on diagnoses can't thank you enough.i ran ml up a grass bank agai n and heard the abs pump make its chattering noise along with yellow exclamation symbol so it knew it was loosing grip and it thought it was taking action.so inspection of the front to rear brake lines and sure enough they were the wrong way round swapped them and now it climbs up the bank no problem no lights were lit because ml thought everything was working.if you was'nt the complete other side of the world I would definitely be due you a pint.thanks again.
