Serpentine Belt Replacement ('98 E320)

After 65K miles and 5+ years, the belt is frayed and has visible cracks on the inside surface. I'm assuming subject belt replacement is a "no brainer" given a warm garage, plenty of light, and cold 6-pack.

Questions:
1. As I stand in front of my car looking down on the belt's path, which pully releases the belt's tension?
2. Can the fan shroud be removed without 1st removing the fan?
3. Should I come at this from the top or bottom?
4. Any tricks I should know before attempting subject service?

Thanks in advance.
Rudy
