I close door, window goes down a little, then back up..?

Sorry guys, I am a newbie here, but I noticed in my 2000 CL that although my windows are closed when I shut car off, they will go down a small crack once I take key out, and once I shut door it goes back up again, is it on some sort of memory setting?

It's standard on the coupes, my CLK did it as well. Makes it easier to close the door.

could be like my BMW convertible which had no metal surround for the window when the door is open. The groove that the window rests in when the door is closed is attached to the roof. So if the window did not go up and down when opening and closing you would shatter the window(cause 1/4 inch of it is inside the groove of the roof and not merely resting on a rubber gasket as many cheaper cars do). Always made me worry that the motor would go out one day and my window would shatter.....

It is also on the SL. It has a couple of functions:

1. It decreases the pressure in your cabin as you close the door. Therefore you don't get that irritating half closed door that you have to reopen and close again. With the window slightly open, the door will close readily. The window then closes itself for a better seal.

2. It also preserves the seals. Since the CL and SL both do not have framed windows, the closing of the door would cause the window to "crush" in on the seal each and every time that the door was closed. Over time this would cause the seal to move and warp. Then you don't have a good wind/weather seal - more wind noice and the ability to let water in. Having the window open and close itself allows the window to slide in the intended track of the seal and not reshape it.

Cars that have framed windows, like the S and E, don't have these potentital issues because the door frame is what is contacting the body of the car whenever the door is closed.

Regardless, you won't shatter your window. My '88 SL has the same style of windows (frameless) and they have never shattered in 15 years.
