500SEL problem
Hi All
I have a 1987 500SEL. I'm having problems starting it on a morning or when I haven't used it for several hours.
It turns over but does not start for ages (approx one minute). I have to keep turning her over for ages before she just fires up. Then I have to hope the engine doesn't stop again and I have to keep my foot on the gas for about ten seconds and eventually she fires properly and the revs go up. At the same time this started, the idle speed has shot up to 1500/2000 revs, so when I go between reverse or drive or park, the revs go up and when she gets into gear it slams into gear making the back wheels turn abit even when I have the brakes on. Which i imagine is nopt good for the gear box.
I hope you understand what I'm trying to say?
I've taken her into my local garage for a service and to get this sorted but they don't know whats going on. If anyone could give me a few pointers, that would be very much appreciated.
Cheers for your time

If you are having difficulty starting the engine, there is most likely a problem with fuel delivery (getting gasoline from the tank to the injection system). One of the fuel pumps could be burned out, or a filter clogged. Your MB shop should be able to use the fuel injection pressure testing tool to verify the proper functioning of the delivery/injection system.

Hi All
Solved the problem myself. After looking through other posts (theres a lesson in there somewhere), I found other posts with exactly the same problems as mine, plus the fact that the ABS light was constantly on, which I didn't realise was part of the problem. It was the OVP (Over Voltage Protector) relay. Changed it, and car was fine.
Cheers all
