Door Lock Problem 500 SEL

I am not sure if we have a mechanical problem or not since we are new to the world of Mercedes (but loving it). We have 1985 gray market 500 SEL (not sure if that matters). In the manual it says that you can lock the car by turning the key in the drivers side door and that will lock all the doors plus set the alarm. When we try to do this nothing happens, does that mean there is a mechanical problem with the locking system (and if so any clues to what is not working) or does this car not have this feature?

Any help would be appreciated.

I've got an 85 500 SEL with probably the same features. As far as the key in the door lock, consider that when you turn to lock it, hold the key in place until you hear all the door locks go down, then remove the key. If this doesn't happen, you might want to get some lithium grease or WD-40 and apply it in the grooves where each door lock knob is located. Again, if this doesn't help, check your fuse box. A couple of times already I've triggered the car alarm without waiting to hear all the locks slide in place.
