2000 ml270 trans cooler question

After having transmission issues i removed and rebuilt my 722.6 and it was pretty straight forward but to make sure i dont get any major issues i decided to check the trans cooler and its not what i expected, the 2 oil lines go up to heat exchanger behind the oil filter housing not to the radiator, i checked, checked and checked again and my car is completly standard but does not have the trans cooler in the rad, can anybody tell me if this type of cooler is prome to causing glycol issues? And has anybody ever fitted a seperate cooler for the transmission cheers pete

The transmission cooler is on the side of the block as you've found. These coolers aren't prone to contamination issues found in oil coolers in the radiator. Unless you're towing alot of heavy loads (3000LB+) the factory oil cooler is pretty good. The diesel version has a much greater capacity than the petrol versions in the radiators.
