Question Transmission Question

My 1982 380SL might have a trany problems and I need some advice.
When the car is cold the trany slips when shifting into 2nd and 3rd.
My mechanic told me that he doesn't think it is the bands since thay would cuase more of a problem when the car is hot.
I changed the fluid and filter and the problem became not a bad but it still exists.
Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Perhaps its a valve or a pump beginning to fail. How does your mechanic know its not the bands without opening up the trans. Does he have X Ray eyes?? Just have it pulled and rebuilt.

Well he said that if it was the bands it would always get worse when the trany got hot. My problem actually goes away when it it hot.
I took the car to a transmission place yesterday (well respected and honest guy) and he told me the same thing. He feels that the problem is old and dried up seals. He suggested adding a can of transmission conditioner since that will soften up the rubber seals. He said if that doesn't work the seals need to be replaced. OUCH

btw - the trany guy owns a 500SL

So I added the stuff and I will report back on what happened.

That kind of stuff usually does not work.

You are most likely rught but it is worth a try.
It was suggested by the trany guy. He said to add it and then he will change the transmission fluid in like 750 miles.
It it works it will save me big money since to replace the seals means removal of the transmission from the car which means lot of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$
