always on headlight

my center headlights on the 1997 e420 do not stay on at night.

If I do not manually turn off the headlights all 4 stay on.

I thought there was some sort of sensor that keeps them on long enough for me to walk to my door at night and then they should go off.

Any ideas on what I should check first before I take it to the dealer?

no it just amazes me that people ask questions on this board , when the information they seek alot of the time is in their glovebox. if you read the manual then what does it say? does it say that you have this option or not? if it does have this option then how does the manual say to enable it? you see my point. im not trying to be a smart *** but I beleive that you may be able to answer your own question.

I can only give you experience with my 99 E430 I had. The fog lights and running lights will stay on after the car is turned off and all doors are closed and locked upon exit. This only occurs if the programming in the headlight circuit has been done. This can be done in pre-set second intervals. If they are not coming on now, the dealer or someone with a Star Diagnostics computer will have to reset them to your liking. Also while you are there ask them to change the door locking arrangement too if you like. Your owner's manual will tell you if you have these features on your model, as I am not familiar with this on a 97.

I did not mean to come off as hostile re; looking in the manual about the always on headlight. The manual only says that the lights will go on after the lastdoor is closed and stay on for approx 30 seconds. It does not talk about programing options or any way to turn it on or off etc. or where the sensor is located.
Thanks for your help on this

Most likely the previous owner had the features turned off. The dealer can turn it back on for you. There is not a sensor, the car will automatically do it, when the headlights have been on while the car was running.

thanks for the help. I have put a call in to the dealership to see if there is a reset available. I will let you know the outcome in case someone else has this situation.
