C36 red flags
I'm considering the purchase of a 1997 C36.
Are there any red flags I should watch for that are specific to this model?
From the standpoint of reliability, is the C36 any better/worse than a standard C280 or C230, or a similar year E class?
Finally, I've heard that parts can be a little tough to get, are they more expensive for this vehicle?
I drive a VR6 Corrado right now, so I'm used to a little "drama" when it comes to repairs and parts, and I want to make sure I know what I'm getting myself into!
Thanks for your insight!

Not too many C36-only red flags that I'm aware of. All the Mercedes inline-six cylinder engines have a history of oil leaks from the right rear corner of the head gasket, so thats one area to look out for. Front lower control arm bushings split open, causing a vibration at freeway speeds. I do know that front brakes pads and rotors are a LOT more expensive than a standard C-class, but I forget how much exactly. As far as comparing the reliability to a C280 or C230, the C280 is about the same. The C230 is a nearly indestructable car due to it's excellent motor. A '97 E320 is about the same as a C280/C36, same head gasket leaks, same control arm bushings. If you want an E320, go with at least a '98, because it got a completely new engine that year (A V6 instead of an inline). The V8 E420 is another excellent car, more reliable than a C280/C36/E320, but not quite as reliable as a C230.
