dude, every phone has an esn, much like every car has a vin. remove the battery and you'll see barcodes (on the phone, not the battery) with numbers(see attached). the esn is expressed either as DEC (decimal) or HEX (hexidecimal) or both. once you have the number, a wireless service provider should be able to tell you if the phone is compatible with their network or not. motorola made startacs in every format: CDMA, TDMA, GSM, as well as old fashioned analog AMPS. you're limited to the provider that offers the format your phone is designed for. alternately, you can buy a startac or timeport on ebay that is the format you want (I bought a CDMA so I could activate it with Verizon Wireless, for example). one other tip: often, if you call 611 from the inactive phone, it will connect you to the company whose network your phone is designed for. good luck.
