That engine startup whirring noise - listen here...
Startup engine whrring noise from my C43
Here's the sound I get when starting the engine. We had the same sound on our old C280. You'll notice that it almost goes away by the end of the 30 seconds.
I've also heard it on most C43's and C280's I've driven.
I'm not worried, but would love to know what the noise is.
Thanks!
John

wow!
It sounds like a garbage truck crushing a load, or maybe a pto operating a pump on a municipal sewer truck, cleaning out a sewer

Wow, Mike, you're right. It does sound exactly like a garbage truck.
I should note that the varying idle was solely due to me reving the engine to about 1500 rpm every so often.
Anyone know what the sound is from?

It's still a hell of a nice car though.
I'd guess it's one of the auxiliary rotary devices driven by the engine: alternator, power steering pump, a/c compressor, etc warming up. It's definitely not internal to the engine so I wouldn't worry about it.

WHOOOOA - jhuang,
I played it backwards and it is drexelbmwhe is saying that his Mom told him to posses your car and tell you to post a picture so he can verify that you really have one!
Just kidding DUDE.
Sounds to me like one of the clutches, either the air-compressor or alternator or what ever you have attached to this thing.
I still think that the Mom story is better.

YES
YES.... this sound is exactly what I had in my CLK 320 30,000 km into the clock.
It turned out to be the alternator which was replaced under warranty.
I managed to find out how much it would have cost me if it wasnt.... $ 1300.00 locally at the dealer.
