Ecu problems

Hello I have a 1997 Mercedes C280 and lately it's been running very badly when heats up it sputters and won't go over 1000 RPM's has barely any power... I brought it to the dealership and they said it was my ECU and a new one is 4000 dollars my question is should i cut my loss or should I buy a used ECU and if so.... is it Plug and Play what is necessary to fix this problem it's my first car and I'd hate to see it go to such a silly problem.

No it is not plug and play---make sure that you purchase the same part number ECU, then you have to send the ECU to a tuner who will have to remove the old VIN and put your VIN into the ECU else the car will never start!
