1990 420SEL - Engine Removal

This engine with 455K is in need of a re-bore (using a diamond hone, the only acceptable method of re-boring an alloy block cast with ALUSIL technology) and I need to determine if I can remove the engine without the transmission, or is it easier to remove both together.

Any advice including associated problems will be appreciated.

Thanks

It would likely come out easier with out the transmission, less space and way less tilt and lifting height is needed.

The engine and transmission can be removed together and it will save you some time but you need to have an engine tilter hook up to get it out together without damaging the core support or yourself. With that kind of mileage the transmission should be ready for its second rebuild unless you already did it. It will be quite expensive to rebuild that engine and finding a machine shop that can re-siliconize the bores is not always easy. I would look for a lower mileage used engine with good maintenance and just redo the heads with new guides and put timing chain and rails.
