Using a 2003 C240 shifter on a 2002 C240

Long story short, the range selector switch went on the old shifter so I went to the junkyard to get a new one, found one relatively easily but it was for a 2003 c240 ( I didn't anticipate any differences between an 02' C240 and an 03' C240) and I didn't examine it until I got home and tried to put it into the car, and it became apparent that they have different connectors despite being in the same class (i think its called the W203). I'm curious if theres anyway to remedy this solution or if the shifter from that exact year is the only one which will be operable. There are two connectors and one of which is shared by both shifters, but the second connector is different on the newer shifter. Thanks
