M156 Camshaft Adjusters - Installation Help Needed
Each cylinder head of the M156 contains two camshaft adjusters, each of which is equipped with a double row of teeth on two separate plates that engage the intermediate camshaft drive gear. As per the WIS instructions. once properly positioned, each adjuster is locked at the rear before it is removed.
In this particular repair, when removed from the engine each adjuster presented with the gear rows slightly askew from each other, which in turn now prevents the reinstallation of one of the adjusters, as it is impossible to engage the adjuster's gears with the camshaft adjuster gear.
When the adjuster fixation bolt is removed from the rear of this askew adjuster, the rear plate of gears can be rotated slightly clockwise to become sufficiently parallel with the front row of gears (see photo, below), thereby permitting engagement with the intermediate camshaft drive gear. Doing so, however, does change the position of the rear row by one tooth. Is this permissible? Does this change of position result in an uncompensated timing change and, if so, would it be rectified by the camshaft adjuster recalibration procedure performed using SDS?
Thanks.

The toothed portion is apparently held in place in relation to the front part of the adjuster by means of a strong internal spring. But the adjuster can be disassembled by removal of the four bolts at the front of the adjuster.
Can the adjuster be disassembled, repositioned and then reassembled?
Tasos demonstrates disassembly of M156 cam adjusters but makes no mention of the location of the internal spring or whether repositioning of the toothed portion is possible.

Probably solved by now but for anyone searching the forums for this, do not do this by hand. Your timing toolkit should have a bolt on that pressurizes the teeth to alignment. Do not take the new camshaft adjuster apart, there is no need.
