I recently bought a CE 230 (1988) but here's the issue:

- the battery is dead
- the trunk is closed
- the trunk cannot be opened with a key because I literally don't have the lock mechanism.

Here's what it looks like:



There's literally a black hole. How can I open the trunk if it's solidly closed and I don't even have the lock mechanism?

Schedule a locksmith or get a torch and cut the trunk out!

well, the former lock mechanism HAD to connect with SOMETHING inside the trunk..
without doing a lot of research, what is inside that black hole..?
if nothing, thats a problem..
if SOMETHING then there might be a slot that a flat screwdriver might fit and turn..

did you ask the former owner how HE opened the trunk..?
