Keyless Go replacement fobs?

When we got a used 2008 GL320 CDi it came with just one keyfob. I started calling dealers and I am getting quotes from $350 + $150 for programming to over $800!
I know that programming requires a handshake from server in Germany before it can be programmed, but I also read on forums that with VIN info fob can be programmed and key cut without a car. Is that true? Is there a way to get a Keyless Go fob for less than $500? Any info would be greatly appreciated!

2017 GLE350 4MATIC
I recently ordered a new fob for a 2017 GLE350 4MATIC with Keyless Go. The dealer required that I show up in person with the title to prove ownership. That makes sense to me.

I purchased a key fob, deactivation of the second (missing) fob, and programming of the new fob. It was something in the range of $300. I imagine pricing depends on dealer location, vehicle model and maybe a few other things. $500 does not sound completely out of the range.

Buy the key fob from the dealer, put it in the ignition, start the car, drive it around for two to two and one-half hours to let it "marry" itself to the car's electronics. FWIW, on a DAS3 W211, it takes 125 minutes for the key to teach in to the electronics. I'm sure as hell not going to pay a dealer two hours labor for a technician to sit there and watch my car while it is sitting idling with the new key in the ignition.

Look somewhere around pages 62 through 70...

After being burned with no extra key fob on both of my Mercedes, I will make it a point for the seller to show me the second functioning key fob or they can knock $500 off the price.

Yeah, these keys don't need to be programmed. The newer keys do though. Buy the key through the dealer and refuse the programming if they allow it.
