my 97 sl500 started making a trumpeting noise when going certain speeds. appears to be coming from rear of vehicle. any ideas?? thank you in advance

Trumpeting? Is there another way to describe the noise? Does it change when:

- the accelerator pedal is lifted, or depressed
- the vehicle speeds up, or slows down
- the brakes are applied, or released
- the steering wheel is turned, or when it is straight
- the vehicle goes over bumps, or a smooth road
- the pavement surface is smooth, grooved, or rough/bumpy

Howling sound at various speeds. Let off accelerator and it stops. Rear end was changed and didn’t fix problem. Took to dealer and they said they couldn’t duplicate the problem, so there was nothing they could do. No other symptoms from your list, apply. Thx

Rear axle gear whine, or rear axle bearing howl, whichever is most commonly experienced on that axle.

Are you 100% sure the dealer changed the axle? What exactly did they change? Is it listed on the service invoice? Was it a remanufactured unit, or new?

Bad rubber mounts/isolators can contribute to this or make noise more pronounced.
