Arrow 240D, should i buy?

I have been thinking about buying a mercedes 240D diesel, i believe it is a 1974. It has a little rust, however I am not too concerned as I know auto-body. I am not sure right now as to the state of the engine, etc. because I have not asked the current owner. Interior is good. I was wondering about a good asking price if it is even worthwhile to get in the first place. Any input would be appreciated.
Thx

value

An old pre-W124 240 D with some rust can't be worth more than $1000 CDN (about $640 US).

It is an ancient car and not a sensible choice for a daily driver.

If you want to restore it, fine (if you can afford it), but I would firstly ask: why a 240 D? Even in top condition it would be a low-value car. Perhaps your reasons for considering it should be elaborated on?

Bad choice, expensive to maintain for its cost and expensive parts. You will most likely be its last owner before the junk yard.

maitenence

what maitnence? it is a diesel!!! if I really need to I am just going to rebulid the engine. Diesel engines are very simplistic and very low mainence. In fact most train enginges you see (diesels) are from the 1950s. They are good reliable engines.

Its likely that you will have over the price of the car in just parts for a rebuild. Then theres also the trans, suspension, differential and electrics. This is the kind of car you see abandoned in bad neighborhoods with the wheels removed and rusting away, or, maybe it will end up in your driveway creating an eyesore for your neighbors just rusting away. Its also likely that the engine is not even rebuildable with block damage. You asked for advice, you have it now go out and waste your money and end up walking

Arrow thx

thx for the help, this is under the assmuption that the car is running and fine. I have given it a fairly thorough visual inspection. The interior needs to be cleaned and there is some rust that needs to be fixed. I don't believe there is any engine, electrical or suspension damage. If there turns out to be some I doubt I will be able to afford the car. I do have some money but not much. Trust me, the car is in a nice neighborhood. The owner simply has the inability to drive now. It is this car of a 91 Honda Accord LX. I just hope the car is in good condition. Thx again for the advice.
