Who is good at coding? ECU -TCU 7G-tronic to 9G-tronic
The only OM642 engine + 9G-Tronic transmission combination is the GLC 350d. You might think about using a transmission and TCU from a part-out GLC 350d. A question will be, with the later model OM642 in the GLC paired with the 9G, what will be required with your older OM642 to make the swap? Engine changes will also be necessary, specifically spark, fuel and possibly cam position mapping. Likely also EGR and turbo control.
Keep us posted.

What I have learned is, in the EU the 0M642 where the first engines with the 9G, in 2013 was the first year MB offered this in an E350 Bluetec. To maximize mileage, that what was said in PR. Not offered in the US.
Physical / mechanical should be for the most part a direct swap fit, They are backwards compatible.
Motivation? No different than modifying US vehicles. People do this all the time, to improve what they have. I did a 1986 6.2NA GM diesel to a 4L85E transmission, running an independent controller,. The vehicle is a 1986 5/4 ton pickup with a utility body,
Expensive? What is considered expensive?
You can find a pulled 9G with low mileage less than 20K for less than $2,500.00 and that is from a salvage yard. I performed all the labor..
The more important issue is programming.
I am not that familiar with the programming for MB, but I will be.
