Aware Of A 1987 300e Fourmatic?

I HAVE BEEN OFFERED A 1987 300E FOURMATIC. THE VIN IS EUROPEAN, IS ANYONE AWARE OF FOURMATIC BEING BUILT PRIOR TO 1990 IN EUROPE.
MY MECHANIC SAYS THE EARLY US MODELS ARE TROUBLESOME, DOES ANYONE CONFIRM OR DENY THIS, HOW ABOUT THE EUROPEAN MODEL IF IT EXISTS?
