Does latest SBC fit early year cars?

Does latest SBC fit early year cars?
Dear all, I’d like to buy a brand new SBC unit. Mine is working fine and I had replaced pressure accumulator two years ago also for precautionary reasons. I think I am just being paranoid and would like to have a new one.
Anyways, since I am getting new one, I think it’s better to purchase one with latest hardware and software version. Questions…
1. Is latest SBC unit compatible with ALL SBC vehicles? I believe latest SBC-equipped vehicle is MY12 (produced in 2011) SLs. Does SBC unit from a 12’ SL work on early year (say 03 04) SLs?
2. Does vehicle with distronic require special SBC software version (or even hardware) ?
3. Does SBC unit on a SLR have stronger internal parts? If so, and if SBCs are compatible across models, I guess installing a SBC for SLR on a much less powerful car would make it last longer.
