Most likely you will never need chains. Perhaps a set of 4 good winter tires. If you MUST install chains I would do the rear wheels as the greatest percentage of power is directed there. I do not know if you even have the clearance for chains and you may do some damage. In the US at least in the Northeast chains are really a thing of the past.

I havn't used chains on my past FWD vehicles, but my brother has on his Volvo. I would feel more comfortable putting chains on the back of an AWD vehice due to clearance issues, but I could think of arguments for putting them up front for stearing and vector control.
I would be interested to hear from someone with more experience with AWD and chains.

Chains!?!?
I can't remember the last time that I saw chains on a passenger vehicle in Canada. Winter tires, AWD/4WD and driving for the conditions. That's all you'll need.

Same here, in northwestern Canada, had a Volvo 850 Turbo, (FWD), never neede chains with Kumho Izenstud tires on it. My ML320 will get new Michellin Cross-Terrains this fall, but unless you live in an area with bottomless snow, the newer tires should prevail over chains. Unless it's glare ice, I would only think of rear chains, since the fronts with chains can rip your inner fenders all to rat....
I guess it's more of a climate thing, depending on what the winter temps are you're dealing with, not so cold, but heavy wet snow. Most times, chains are for ice roads, the tires should clean themselves otherwise.
