CLS550/M278 - Timing issue?

122,000 miles on her and have never had an issue. Drove super smooth.

Let me go back to Saturday(11/14) when she up and died on me while driving. Apparently the battery was so dead it was causing voltage issues. I replaced it yesterday and the car started up fine and idled fine.

Today I went to actually drive it (first time since battery replacement) and something was odd from the get go. The engine was stuttering between 1000-2000 RPM but fine outside of those ranges. Well, 10 miles down the road I started hearing noises. At first it sounded sort of similar to a belt slip, but then I began hearing a knock type sound, but only on deceleration or when the engine was lowering RPM. As soon as I heard a knock I pulled over and had the car towed.

Does this sound like timing chain system issues? (I drive pretty calm and don't beat up on it)

Any other ideas/thoughts? I thought it was so odd that this only started after my battery problems.

I should also note that the exhaust didn't sound right. It was pretty loud in the cabin.

I can assure you the battery is not at anyway at fault and if you have looked and felt around the front of the engine and found nothing out of the ordinary. Then your FUUAA will not work to locate an fix the issue. You need responsible help that knows the cars engine as it could be all sorts of issues related to the internal working of the engine.

Someone here has to have encountered this same behavior. Crossing my fingers and bringing this to the top.
