Greetings and Happy New Year to the forum!

I wanted to share my experience and takeaways troubleshooting access to WIS-net through MB's updated ISP Portal.

Background:
I wanted to access WIS-net to fetch some workshop instructions to assist me in some routine maintenance on my W166. Though I am well aware of the various manners in obtaining workshop service information non-traditionally, I elected to utilize the official channel. As it has been a while since I've accessed WIS-net or EPC individually, I found that MB had deployed a new website to replace the older site. As I'm sure many of us are aware, the old site left much to be desired.

After creating an individual account and purchasing a 1-week subscription, I was unable to access WIS-net. I tried various combinations of web plug-ins, Java versions, etc., but to no avail. Thus, I felt it may be helpful to share my experience and a distilled version of what I found to be the proper procedure in accessing this application.

My Configuration:
  • Windows 10
  • Google Chrome
Procedure:
  1. Create an account on https://www.startekinfo.com/home
    1. There will be a barrage of emails during this process. I would highly recommend saving them for future use.
  2. Purchase your subscription
  3. Install OpenWebStart
    1. Link: https://retail.aftersales.i.daimler....s/info_en.html
    2. WIS-net is a Java Web Start application. Java Web Start is a bit outdated and to at least some extent, no longer supported. Since it's on the back burner, compatibility with modern operating systems and browsers is lackluster.
    3. OpenWebStart is an application that is recommended by MB to access various Web Start applications. If you are interested, I would highly recommend reading the information on the website linked above.
    4. The OpenWebStart website has great information on installation, troubleshooting, etc.
  4. Reboot your computer
  5. Login to the ISP Portal and select WIS-net.
  6. Select 'Launch WIS-net'

    1.
  7. After clicking on this button, you will see a download appear. In Google Chrome, this download may be flagged as harmful. Though only conjecture, it's because Java Web Start is a bit outdated. Go ahead and click "Keep". It should look something like what's below:
    1. Note, if you do not see a similar icon associated with this download, you may have an issue with your OpenWebStart installation.
  8. Next, click the download. Various prompts will ask you to download or allow the various applications to run. Select either download or allow on all these prompts.
  9. WIS-net will attempt to launch after the application has downloaded.
  10. Here is where I began to experience issues. WIS-net would display its loading screen, and upon completion, I would receive an error that it failed to initialize. At this point, I tried every troubleshooting step to remediate any issues with Java, my browser, etc.
    1. If you experience this error, there is likely an issue with your account. I don't have further details, but I can tell you that you have to contact the ISP portal's support team (who are both very polite and responsive). They will be able to assist you.
    2. If you have other issues, I would look in the troubleshooting section of the OpenWebStart website. There is a lot of great information there.
---
I realize this issue may be isolated to just me, but I hope these steps provide some detail and clarity into the rather undocumented process of accessing WIS-net.

If you have further questions, I will do my best to answer them based on my knowledge and experience.

Happy new year to all!
