Looking up VIN number from engine number

Hello everyone,
I have a 1982 Mercedes 380SL, where the original engine was replaced later.
I have the car VIN number and I have the number of the new engine mounted in the car.
I do not know much about the engine and which model it corresponds to? All I know it's an 8cylinder 5.0Ltr engine.
I want to get details about the engine, what parts to use? and specifically now, what spark plug type should I get?
How can I know what spare parts to use by looking up the engine number?
Is there a way to lookup the VIN number (of the old car this engine used to be mounted on) from the engine number?
Thank you.

Provide your VIN and the number on the current engine and I may be able to help you with the details.

Your car, based on the VIN, is a USA based 380SL that originally came with 116.962 3.8L gas engine (serial number 116962 12 008098). The engine in your car, 117.963 is a 5.0L gas engine. That sized and enigine family was often used in the 126 full body sized S class of the early to mid 1980's. It was used in all markets, US, Japan, Europe and so on.
