ECU Replacement Question

Does anyone know if the W202 ECU's are coded to the car? For example can I just swap out a used ECU from annother car without any issues or do I have to have the dealer or someone with Mercedes Star software re-program something? I'm trying a 1996 ECU on my 1995 C36 and the car won't start. I know the engines and transmissions were the same between 1995 and 1996.

Once an ECU is married, its over. Gotta get a new one and have the dealer program it. Are you certain its the computer? They rarely fail to a no start condition...
