Question Electrical connector

Recently purchased my 1st Benz and was doing some cleaning in the passenger foot rest area. When I pulled up the carpet I noticed a plastic panel and removed it. Underneath was a rather large black box with two cables lying next to it - unplugged. I would like to know what the box is for and what might happen if I plugged in the connectors, please. Thanks
