Model code from VIN number?
Hi there - I'm new the forum. I've been exploring Mercedes for a short while now and I have a question about VIN numbers and the Mercedes model codes. Forgive me if this is a simple or silly question but I'm still learning about them.
My question is - is the model code in the VIN number itself? For example, this 2024 G63 with VIN W1NYC7HJ5RX497334 ... I've read online that the model is characters 4 - 8 which would be YC7HJ but I don't believe this is the model code for a 2024 G63, right?
Any guidance here is much appreciated - thank you in advance.

I'm not sure if the model number is embedded in the VIN or if it's stored separately in an ECU. Some OBDII scanners can read out model info. The Topdon AD900BT scanner I have reads out the VIN, then the model (463.261 - G550), and then some system configuration ID 005d0002, which might be a software version reference.

The FIN embeds the model designation. LASTVIN and EPC show the FIN. In your case, 463277.

I’m coming from the BMW world where model codes are common, like the F15 is an X5 SUV, etc. I guess I’m just looking for the equivalent in Mercedes ?

Sorry one more question. Now I’m going down the rabbit hole. In the document, it shows the engine number: 17798030073055
I googled and found that it breaks down as:
engine type and version: 177 980
something ?: 30
serial: 073055
What does the 30 stand for?

The Vehicle Identification number (VIN) is FIN / VIN. The lastvin.com website spells out FIN better - but your VIN was a no result. The FIN is just a bit different and I don't know why it exists - but it does carry the model designation at the 4-9 digits. 463 being the series and 277 being the model designation. For example my W203 C55 sedan is 203076 and I think the wagon is a 203077. I haven't been able to figure out what the 30 is - but my guess is an assembly plant code?
