Welding stock exhaust pipes- What are they made of?
My 2010 W204 C300 4matic sport exhaust has a broken flange and I have a plan on how to fix it myself. basically cut the damaged flange off and slide a new piece over the remaining exhaust pipe. If my measurements are right then the new piece should fit and i can get away with installing a clamp, but in case something is off and there is a fitment issue i may want to weld in to prevent exhaust leaks. I did a few test pieces but wont know until i cut the flange off and can fit it on to see. I am using 304 stainless steel.
Anyone know the exact material the exhaust pipes are made from? From the condition I was thinking its 304 but the pipe at that area is very slightly magnetic. I heard people say MB uses 409 but i think it would be in much worse condition if so. The reason i would like to know is so i can use the right welding wire. I want to do the best that I can with what I have, so I will be using flux core mig wire. Was thinking either 308 or 309. or what have others used that welded there stock exhaust pipes for whatever reason?
