Engine code spec decoder

Hi All,

Can someone point me in the direction of an engine number decoder or help me decode one please?

I need to get my engine replaced 651.950 xxx xxx xx and the mechanic is proposing a replacement with a 651.955 yyy yyy yy

I am concerned that the replacement may not be as powerful as the original I had so I wanted some help in decoding the 14 digit engine codes please. I want to make sure the HP and KW etc are of similar values by using the full engine codes/serials and not the VIN numbers.

Did you ask the mechanic? Is this a dealer or an independent?
