Engine guys please help! I can turn rotor arm around???????

190e 1987, 2.0, 120,000
Suddenly, after driving for 2 hours, engine loss power, then stalled.
After checking everything, I find amazingly, I can hold onto the rotor arm, and turn it in any direction, gives a 'click' about every 30 degrees..?
But- after turning over engine quite a few times ...rotor seems to 'lock' and is back to normal, 'solid' ..( though it isnt -it seems- in the correct firing postion, and giving a 'kick back',or no start when trying to start), tried more and did managed, maybe by fluke, to get it running ..and seemed spot on..left it ticking over for about 3 minutes and could rev it, yet, after trying to drive up the road about 200 yards, died and back to same problem - I can turn rotor arm around again.
Isn't the (brand new) rotor arm to shaft, as I took of arm, - I can still move shaft...
Also, removed whole distributor from block, distributor-shaft and gear solid and ok ... so what's gone wrong then , and how hard to fix?
