'03 ML55 loud rattling ,clicking sound from engine

We have an '03 ML55, and when the engine is cold, there's a loud clicking and rattling sound from the engine. If I put it in first gear, rev to about 2500 RPM then ease off the throttle, as the revs are dropping through the 1400-1700 rev range, the engine produces the sound. It happens in normal driving too, but that's the easiest way to get it to make the noise. It does it until the engine temperature is about 70 Degrees C, as indicated on the gauge(or is that oil temp.?). thanks in advance for advice on what it could be.

You didn't indicate whether the clicking was in time with the revs or not. Our '99 ML430 had a loose monolith in one of the (there are left and right) catalytic converters, and it made ahost of different weird noises, including rattles and the occasional "clink".

The Starmark warranty on that car paid for itself on that service call.

yes, it's in time with the revs, it clicks continually between 1400 and 1700 RPMs

Could be the Cats or perhaps the belt tensioner.
