A whirling thud sound at 40 to 60mph??

At around 40 MPH I hear a deep rhythmic whirling thud sound. It's not my radio.
It's been that way for 2 yrs. I thought it was a bad alignment or bend rims. I had the car aligned & rims changed many months ago.
Could it be in the transmission?
The car handles fine & always checks out ok when in the shop for usual maintenance. I play music a lot so a usually don't hear it & I forget about it. How can I eliminate this sound?
