W203 Front Engine Cover/Oil Filter Housing

My salvage project, an '04 C240 has a broken oil filter housing, which is, of course, incorporated in the front cover. The front cover is sandwiched between the heads and the oil pan, as well as having a multitude of bolt on parts attached to it . . . Any tips on replacing it? I'd prefer to do it in the car, if possible. Any tips on crank pulley removal? My impact wrench didn't get it, and I need to lock up the engine somehow to use a breaker bar (automatic car . . . ). I am assuming it is a typical counter-clockwise to loosen thread????

Thanks,

John

isnt it under warranty? Why not just have the dealer do it?

I bought the car as a project: it is collision damage, so not covered by warranty. Thanks for the thought, though. I'd love for somebody else to have to do this part of it . . . .

Get a more powerful impact and it will come off, yes normal threads. It is on really good like 300nm and 90 degrees or is it more? There is a special tool for the crank pully, it is circle about 4 inch in diameter with four pins to lock into the pully with a short handle to insert into a long pipe. You could do it in the car, remove the fan and radiator to gain better access, but it is easier out of the car. Once you get all the accessiories off the cover and all other bolts out it will be fairly difficult to get the cover off, but it will come off with some motivation.
