The original owner purchased the car in December of 1986. They serviced it at the dealer for the first 30,000 miles. We have the stamps in the maintenance book recording this. They continued servicing at a Mercedes Benz dealer until they sold the car to the current owner in 2004. The current owner is a Porsche friend of mine and purchased the car with 44,000 miles on the odometer. She continued to maintain this SL to the same level as the previous owner. She either serviced the car at a local Los Angeles Mercedes dealer or a top independent mechanic.

Looking through the stack of records, it appears that no service was ever over looked. Besides the normal routine service, at 55k miles, the cooling system was serviced. The nearly $2,000 bill included a new water pump, thermostat, all new hoses, and new belts. Also, at 66k miles, she had the transmission completely rebuilt (another $2,000 bill). Recently, she had a major service. This included synthetic oil and platinum spark plugs.

All in all, this is a solid driver that could easily be brought to the next level. The paint is in great condition with just some very minor signs of use (a few small scratches here and there). The soft top is in decent condition with minimal fogging of the rear plastic and some minor wear on the soft top. There is a small whole near the rear window and a small tear on the top. Both look to be from getting caught when closing. We can easily have them patched (see photos). The current owner rarely used the soft top. The interior is in decent condition. The driver seat exit bolster is worn out and could use replacing. With some minimal upholstery work (estimated at $500), this interior could really pop! The headliner of the pagoda top looks near perfect. The dashboard has some small cracks from age. They sell some great hard plastic covers that fit amazing on these dashes and are very affordable. All the gauges (except for the clock) appear to work properly as do all the lights. The radio sounds great as well. The A/C blows but not super cold. There was a receipt for the system being rebuilt not to long ago, so maybe just a recharging will do the trick. The tires are nearly worn out and could be replaced. Although the brake light is not on, the pads look to have about 25% life left.

This Mercedes comes complete with all books, records, spare tire, jack, stand for pagoda top, factory windscreen, and extra keys.
