Its a fair bit faster than Cayenne Turbo and in my opinion looks far nicer. Top Gear tested it and said it handled better too.

Price jump from Ml55 not too surprising as that thing was inferior to 4.6iS, its closest rival upon release

Am I understanding an almost 90K SUV coming in suade? If this is the case, that is disappointing from MB. I agree...the interior being made up of plastic and aluminum for this price is really ridiculous.

If I ever bought this thing and then told my dad how much money I spent for it, he'd be thinking he failed as a father in raising me with a good sense of value.

Nick

PS But dad...horsepower costs a lot more now-a-days

Just not woth +$90k in my opinion. I just wanna wait and see how the market will respond to the ML63 pricing. I bet its gonna be interesting to see them sitting at dealers with sales crying for customers to buy them after one year of their release.

Just to let you know. I saw a Burgundy ML63 on the road on Saturday. I couldnt tell if it was a MB test car or Dealer car because it was going the other direction.(factory is only 30-40min away) It looked pretty good from what I could see. Very aggresive looking. This was on I-65 south, north of Birmingham.

I searched Top Gear and couldn't find the article in Top Gear you are referring to. Please advise where you saw this or post a link. Most initial reviews I have seen have said the ML63 is faster than the Cayenne Turbo, but does not handle as well as the Cayenne (and certainly does not offer the same off-road capabilities).

The only head-to-head comparsion I read was in Auto Zeitung magazine. It compared a ML63 and a Cayenne Turbo S. The results were that the ML63 was faster in straight line acceleration, but the Porsche handled better.

Slalom: ML63 58.7 km/h
Cayenne Turbo S 61.9 km/h

Braking (100 km/h to 0): ML63 37.3
Porsche Cayenne Turbo S 36.1

of course since you will buy 10 of them to line up and play hotwheels with.

PS since you have a CLK DTM could you do me a huge favor and take a photo of the shock tower on the drivers side front? I need to see the camber plate on that vehicle.

Do you have details about this part?

A newspaper in the corner to show the date woudl be nice too

look at the spyker d12 it has a 12 cylinder engine 500 horses and hagard looking interior not much more than ml exept 24 inch wheels and has a price tag of almost $300k i think the ml is priced quite well for an amg model

it talks about beating the turbo s but at the same time it beats the price as well ..

I think that they'll sell like hotcakes because the model itself is desirable (size, utility, AWD, MBZ luxury & safety) and the performance is there.... Price against the arguably better-or-not Cayenne Turbo S is attractive too - for those to whom price matters in this segment.

CynCarvin32 - On the CLK DTM shock towers: have looked in my CLK DTM folder for a photo -- and I have nothing of that sort. If you'll send me an email through the MBWorld system (email a member I guess is what it is) I will try to have one taken for you (or take one myself) and get it to you via email in the next week or two. Good enough?

it comes down to what YOU like ... i dont look at a car and say oh people are gonna turn heads when they see me in this ... actualy the ml 63 will be a step down from what i drive .

it all comes down to what the driver likes, if you think range rover is more elegant for you and suits your daily needs than go for it .

so i got a call today from my dealer and final price comes to 95k with all the crap i want lol .. cant wait to push the pedal on that thing!

I'm assuming you're ONLY referring to the exterior of the RR sport (which is too boxy IMO and will look dated in a couple of years if not sooner) b/c the interior of the sport looks very cheap...typical Ford. The interior of the ML looks much "classier".

Nick

PS Acceleration times for the RR sport are pathetic as well.

RR Sport does not compare favorably to the ML, IMHO.

You actually think that the RR Sport is going to do better off-road?

I'd bet that it would -- but I don't see the RR Sport as an off-roader...

these cars are not meant to be used for off roading ... unless your one loaded hill Billy that lives on a farm .. your should prolly think of relocating if you need to drive off road to get to your home ..

and no your 30 foot unpaved driveway is no off roading.

as you can see from all the testing and track times i don't think the ml63 was even tested to go off road

actually with a power ratio split 40/60 and the shocks twice as stiff as a regular ml would be considerably bad idea to go off road with , unless you feel like having your kidneys banged up to the point where you pee blood

not all SUV's and 4 x 4 are meant for off road use or capabilities , some people rather like driving a vehicle that would not get crushed by a soccer mom driving a hummer or a gangster rapper an escalade or vice versa .

but if you are willing to try and tell the rest of us how it goes ... than my hat is off to you.

Here is part of article about the ML63's main competitor and its ability to go off-roading:

"The test car, a £45,000 Cayenne S, fitted with tiptronic automatic gearbox, did have the £1,500 off-road kit, which includes side protectors and ultra-strong skid plates to allow the car to be tobogganed over the more serious off-road hazards. But the vast majority of owners won't need them, save perhaps for peace of mind.

Among the main prerequisites for serious off-roading are lots of ground clearance, a healthy amount of wheel articulation and a means of locking the differentials so that even when only one wheel is in contact with the ground, there's something trying to move you forward.

The Cayenne has all that and a lot more besides. Press one switch and a secondary gearbox gives you six low-range forward speeds, instead of the high-ratio ones needed for road work. Press more switches and a battery of electronics come into play to optimise all the braking and traction systems.

My first hour or so with the car was a true revelation, as it did indeed seem to do everything claimed, including traversing 45-degree slopes in any direction, digging its way through nearly a metre of mud and fording a similar depth of water (enough at a fast walking pace to wash the car completely clean), then climbing out over a muddy bank.

An uphill slope paved with wet logs is one of the toughest off-road traction tests, yet the car hardly seemed to notice.

There was the occasional crash-bang coming from faraway underneath, and the sporadic chatter of electronics, but the Cayenne simply followed the track in second gear when going up and first gear coming down.

After a break to check that the weather really was as cold and miserable as it looked from the comfort of the heated driver's seat, I set out with the intention of breaking the car - but I couldn't."

So it does appear that some of these high end SUV's do perform well off-road

Phil
