I have a 2001 ML 55 and we have lost the keys. I am not close to a dealer and am being cheap and trying to avoid $600 in tow fees. I had a key cut at the dealer ($90) and drove all the way back to the car. It worked in the door and started the truck for a few seconds but died shortly after. I called the dealer and he told me that I need to get it re-programed but they need the car. obviously this is the only key and I am hoping that someone can help me avoid the dreaded thought of paying my tow guys mortgage.

Try to bribe one of the service guys into going with you.
It should certainly be less than $600.
