The ML55, like all other ML's, is built in Tuscaloosa, Alabama in the US.

They just have the 55's move off into a separate assembly line somewhere in the process and then AMG engineers handle it from there in their own section of the factory.

Hope it helps.

E 63S Wagon Renntech, E55 Renntech, SL65, SL 55 030, ML, bunch of old ones--they come, they go...
Here's a neat tidbit...

I passed a truckload of ML's on I 75 today--all new, neat, pretty--amd every one was an ML 270! I can't believe we can't get that or the 400CDI in the US; both are great motors. Just thought you might find that interesting...

Yeah - the diesel-engined ML's used to be made in the Graz, Austria plant, but now all MLs are made in Tuscaloosa, as of the 2002 model year I believe. That was the reason for the huge expansion of the ML factory - plus the fact that soon the A-Class, when it arrives, will probably also be built there, also with the possible MLG or G-Class replacement, along with the GST, which also has been confirmed for production.

But we in the US can't get diesel MB's - the diesel in this country is full of pollutants like sulfur and has loads of carbon, etc. that would ruin the wonderful MB engines. I have heard that people get extremely good gas mileage out of the diesel MB's and that they are very silky, powerful, and quiet.

The ML400CDI is said to provide just as much, if not more, of a feel of power and torque than the ML500, with much better gas mileage.

To my knowledge, the only current mainstream US-sold vehicles with diesel engines are the VW models.

But in many other countries, diesel is extremely popular, especially among luxury cars. Plus diesel is cheaper in most countries (not the US though) than gas is, so why not buy a diesel?

But unfortunately in the US we don't get that choice, just because the oil industry has been cutting corners in diesel production and doesn't want to stop.

I know its kinda OT for the ML55 forum, but look at the C30CDI AMG Sportscoupe - a diesel AMG! Very interesting idea - combine a lot of torque and gas efficiency with relative speed - nice.

I want to see what the MLG will look like. I hope the G Class doesn't loose its boxyness because thats what sets it appart from all those other SUV's.
